Angels Bleed
Angels Bleed
Most depictions of Archangel Michael focus on victory. This work focuses on the cost. "Angels Bleed" explores the moment where duty collides with suffering. Michael stands amid chaos and darkness, not untouched by the battle, but marked by it. The sword remains in his hand. The burden remains on his shoulders. The wounds are real. Because every defender pays a price. The piece challenges the comforting belief that righteousness guarantees safety. It asks a more difficult question: What if courage is not the absence of suffering, but the willingness to endure it?
Hand-burned into solid basswood through an irreversible process of fire and steel, every mark becomes permanent. There are no corrections. No second chances. The medium itself mirrors the reality of sacrifice. Every choice leaves evidence. Every battle leaves scars. The torch shading work adds dramatic depth and intensity, enhancing the visual narrative of the battle's toll. Michael emerges from a landscape consumed by conflict, standing between darkness and those who cannot stand for themselves. He is not depicted as invincible. He is depicted as faithful. That distinction matters. Because the greatest acts of courage are often performed by those who understand the cost and move forward anyway. "Angels Bleed" is a meditation on sacrifice, resilience, duty, and the weight carried by those who choose to protect others despite the consequences. Not all heroes survive unchanged. Not even angels.
This artwork is created entirely by hand from start to finish. The artist redraws the composition freehand for every burn—never traced, never mechanically transferred, never copied. Even when revisiting the same subject, each execution develops its own variations in line work, depth, and texture, ensuring every finished piece is a singular physical work.
Offered in a 12” × 18” format and available with White, Black, or Brown framing, "Angels Bleed" invites profound contemplation on the true cost of courage and the enduring spirit of protection.
