Duality
Duality
Most people want to believe they are one thing. Good. Rational. Civilized. "Duality" challenges that illusion. Beneath every carefully constructed identity lives something older. A force untouched by social expectation, morality, or performance. It is capable of creation and destruction in equal measure. The same instinct that drives love can drive obsession. The same conviction that creates heroes can create monsters. The figure in Duality is not split between good and evil. It is confronting the reality that both reside in the same face.
Burned permanently into solid basswood through fire and steel, the work embraces the irreversible nature of identity itself. Every experience leaves a mark. Every choice feeds one side or the other. Yet neither can ever be fully separated. The torch shading work adds dramatic depth and intensity, enhancing the visual narrative of internal conflict and coexistence. Because the greatest deception is believing the monster is someone else. The greatest revelation is recognizing it when it looks back from the mirror.
This artwork is created entirely by hand from start to finish. The artist redraws the composition freehand for every burn—never traced, never mechanically transferred, never copied. Even when revisiting the same subject, each execution develops its own variations in line work, depth, and texture, ensuring every finished piece is a singular physical work.
Offered in a 12” × 18” format and available with White, Black, or Brown framing, "Duality" invites profound contemplation on the complex nature of self and the coexistence of opposing forces within.
