Under The Mask
Under The Mask
Under The Mask confronts the architecture of concealment — the psychological structures built to suppress instinct, aggression, fear, hunger, and doubt. There is the self that performs, and there is the self that waits. The mask is not decoration; it is enforcement. Stitching suggests repair, but also restraint. The split face implies fracture, but also duality. The teeth emerging beneath the surface suggest force that has not disappeared — only been contained. This piece explores the tension between narrative identity and the older, less filtered impulses that remain beneath it.
This artwork is created using traditional wood burning and pyrography, completed entirely by hand from start to finish. The artist redraws the composition freehand for every burn — never traced, never laser-cut, never mechanically transferred. Even when revisiting similar psychological themes, no two executions are ever identical. Variations in line density, burn depth, and texture ensure each finished piece is a singular, physical original.
Burned into solid basswood using a handheld pyrography tool, this piece required extensive focused labor. Each mark was applied directly to raw wood using controlled heat, with no underpainting and no capacity for revision. Once the surface was altered, it could not be restored. The natural grain of the wood actively shapes the final result, influencing contrast and burn depth in ways that cannot be controlled or replicated. This is not a print or reproduction — it is permanent wood burning art etched directly into the surface.
Offered in a 12” × 18” format with framing options available in White, Black, or Brown, Under The Mask carries a confrontational presence suited for modern, industrial, or darker interiors. It is designed to anchor a space and provoke reflection rather than decorate around comfort.
